IASA president, Tim Morgan, says it
doesn’t seem like it was one year ago
that he was in Las Vegas making an
acceptance speech to the membership as he took on the responsibility
of president of the association. Now,
as he prepared for
the IASA 2016 Education Conference
and Business Show,
he jokes that he’s
been working on his
farewell address.
That’s the life of
an IASA president. A
year is spent preparing for the association’s biggest event
and then it’s over in
the blink of an eye.
Morgan would not
have it any other
way. The highlight
of his year as president has been the
opportunity to work with so many
outstanding volunteers, according to
Morgan.
“The enthusiasm everyone
brings is contagious,” he says. “It’s
rewarding to see the eagerness and
commitment on the part of so many
volunteers. It brings home the theme
for this year of People, Passion, and
Purpose. Seeing the enthusiasm and
commitment that so many bring to
the association makes it worthwhile
and added another dimension to the
experience for me.”
Morgan’s year as president
kicked off last July
with a meeting in
IASA’s home office
in Durham, N.C.,
that included the
management com-
mittee and senior
volunteers and set
the stage for the year.
Goals for 2016 were
established and the
budget was finalized.
After that were
planning meetings
in the fall and the
spring with all the
national volunteers.
Each committee met face-to-face to
discuss the business at hand, whether
it was the business show, webinars,
education programs, roundtables,
publications, marketing, member-
ship, chapter support, volunteer
development or industry relations.
In addition to those meet-

ings, most IASA committees and
sub-committees meet on a monthly
basis via conference call and Morgan
tried to participate in as many of
those as possible.
“It all helped me understand
what I’m seeing and hoping for,” he
says. “The interaction with the volunteers is one of the most rewarding
parts of the experience. You have
an open slate at the start of the year.
Who do you want as keynote? The
roundtables?”
As president, Morgan got to work
alongside executive director Joe
Pomilia. “He is such a seasoned ex-
ecutive director,” says Morgan. “He’s
been through this so many times and
has the interest of the association at
heart. He’s wonderful to work with
and I appreciated his support and en-
couragement throughout the year.”
The time and energy Morgan
needed to be an effective leader for
IASA meant his company had to give
him the leeway to do both jobs. “I’ve
got a great team. My staff is made up
of wonderful people who know their
business well,” he says.
